According to the Italian power transmission system operator (TSO) Terna, electricity consumption in Italy increased by 2.2% in 2024, surpassing 312 TWh, and renewable sources reached their highest share ever, covering 41% of power demand (compared to 37% in 2023), thanks to improved hydropower and solar PV generation.
In 2024 there was a significant growth in renewable production in Italy (+13%) and a slight decline in the net foreign balance (-0.5%), as a result of a strong increase in exports (+48% compared to 2023) and a more modest increase in imports (+2.4%). Around 84% of Italy’s electricity demand in 2024 was met by domestic production and the remaining share by the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. Net national production (264 TWh) increased by 2.7% compared to 2023.
Italy saw double-digit growth in hydropower (+30%) and solar (+19%) production, which in 2024 reached an all-time record of over 36 TWh. Power generation from wind (-5.6%), geothermal (-0.8%), thermal (-6.2%) and especially coal (-71%) decreased in 2024.
In addition, according to Terna, 7,480 MW of new renewable power capacity was added in 2024 (+29% compared to 2023 additions), raising the total renewable capacity in Italy (including biomass) to 76.6 GW, including 37.1 GW of solar and 13 GW of wind power. Over 2.1 GW of new storage capacity was installed during the year, reaching 5,565 MW of nominal power and 12,942 MWh of storage capacity.
